This exceptional 1966 Tudor Submariner 7928 stands as a rare gem in the world of vintage dive watches. A stunning example of Tudor's craftsmanship, this watch features one of the most sought-after dials in the 7928 lineage: the original Black Gloss Mark 6 dial, paired with the distinctive and highly coveted Zinc Sulfide lume. Released in very small numbers, the Mark 6 dial is regarded as the rarest in the 7928 series, only seen in serials between serial range: 506xxx to 598xxx and this particular piece is one of the few examples dating back to the fourth quarter of 1966. Tudorsub.com said this about this particular dial.
‘Yes, Tudor manufactured a glossy dial for a very brief period. Most of the examples found are dated to 1966 and have ”VI 66” stamped within the case back. This was the first time Tudor introduced a glossy dial in their submariner lineup. Tudor would revert back to matte dials for the remainder of the 7928 production and then re-introduce glossy dials in the 1980’s. Lastly, with the introduction of the open chapter, the print transitions from silver to white.’
This Tudor Submariner 7928 not only boasts a rare and historically significant dial variant, but it also features the elusive Zinc Sulfide lume—a material used only during a short window in the mid-1960s, making it highly desirable to collectors. The transition from radium to tritium in the 1960s led many brands to experiment with different lume compounds, and Zinc Sulfide, with its distinctive glow, remains one of the most intriguing materials from this period.
As a true piece of horological history, this Submariner is more than just a watch; it’s a rare opportunity to own one of the last examples from Tudor’s iconic 7928 line, a model that has earned its place in the pantheon of vintage dive watches. For collectors and enthusiasts, finding a Tudor Submariner 7928 with a Mark 6 dial and Zinc Sulfide lume is a rare and exciting opportunity. Don't miss out on the chance to own this unique piece of Tudor history.
