The Tudor Prince Oysterdate is one of those vintage watches that perfectly demonstrates why Tudor has become such an appealing brand for collectors. Classic proportions, reliable mechanical movements and a strong connection to Rolex's history, all without unnecessary complications.

This 1984 Tudor Prince Oysterdate Ref. 74000 is a particularly attractive example, featuring a beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial, a 34mm stainless steel Oyster case and a traditional self-winding movement.

One of the most interesting aspects of vintage Tudor watches is their historical relationship with Rolex. During this period, Tudor watches commonly utilised Rolex-manufactured Oyster cases and crowns, paired with reliable Swiss movements. It was a formula that allowed Tudor to offer much of the practical appeal and design associated with Rolex at a more accessible price.

The caseback of this example proudly displays the inscription 'Original Oyster Case by Rolex Geneva', a wonderful detail that reflects this relationship.

The dial is the standout feature of this particular watch. Finished in a beautiful silver sunburst pattern, it changes character depending on how the light catches its surface. In direct light, the radial brushing becomes particularly pronounced, while in softer conditions it takes on a warmer, almost champagne-like appearance.

Applied baton hour markers and matching hands provide a wonderfully understated look, while the traditional Tudor shield logo sits proudly at 12 o'clock. The dial is completed by the 'Prince Oysterdate' signature and the 'Rotor Self-Winding' designation at 6 o'clock.

At 3 o'clock sits a date aperture, magnified by the characteristic Cyclops lens integrated into the acrylic crystal.

The 34mm stainless steel Oyster case features a smooth polished bezel, elegantly tapered lugs and a screw-down crown. Although modest by contemporary standards, the proportions are beautifully balanced, offering a watch that sits comfortably and discreetly on the wrist.

Powering the watch is a Tudor-modified ETA 2824-2 automatic movement, a well-regarded Swiss calibre known for its reliability and straightforward construction.

Completing the watch is a handmade tan leather strap, which contrasts beautifully against the silver dial and stainless steel case, giving the watch a slightly more relaxed and versatile appearance.

A Word on Condition

This Tudor Prince Oysterdate presents in very attractive overall condition for a watch dating back to 1984.

The original silver sunburst dial is particularly well preserved, retaining its beautiful radial brushed finish. The applied baton markers remain clean and well defined, while the hands complement the dial nicely.

The dial has a lovely warmth to it, especially when viewed in natural light, with the silver finish taking on subtle champagne tones at certain angles. The Tudor shield, dial signatures and minute track all remain clearly legible.

The 34mm stainless steel case is equally attractive, with the tapered lugs retaining a pleasing shape and the combination of polished and brushed surfaces giving the watch a refined appearance.

There are light signs of age and previous wear visible around the case, as you would expect from a vintage watch of this period, but nothing that takes away from its overall presentation.

The original Oyster caseback is correctly engraved with the Rolex Geneva designation, another charming feature of this period of Tudor production.

Fitted with a handmade tan leather strap, the watch presents beautifully and has a particularly elegant appearance on the wrist.

Why Buy This Watch

For me, the appeal of vintage Tudor watches has always been their ability to offer excellent quality and traditional watchmaking without the attention that often comes with wearing a Rolex.

The Prince Oysterdate is a perfect example of that philosophy.

At a glance, this watch shares many of the design characteristics associated with vintage Rolex Oyster watches. The stainless steel case, smooth bezel, Cyclops date magnification and beautifully proportioned dial all contribute to an instantly familiar appearance.

Yet it retains its own identity through the Tudor shield and the simplicity of its overall design.

The silver sunburst dial is a particular highlight. It is understated, but far from boring, with the radial finish bringing the watch to life in different lighting conditions.

I also think the 34mm case is an excellent size for this style of watch. It is comfortable, elegant and works just as well with a shirt and jacket as it does with more casual clothing.

For someone entering the world of vintage Swiss watches, the Tudor Prince Oysterdate offers a great introduction. You have an automatic Swiss movement, a Rolex Oyster case and a timeless design that has aged remarkably well.

Equally, for an established collector, this is a charming everyday vintage watch that offers something a little different from the more commonly encountered Rolex Datejust or Oyster Perpetual.

A wonderfully understated vintage Tudor, with a beautiful dial, excellent proportions and plenty of historical appeal.
