The Tudor Black Bay Ref. 79220B is one of the most important modern Tudors, bridging vintage-inspired design with contemporary execution. Released with the ETA 2824 movement before Tudor moved to in-house calibres, the 79220B is often referred to as the ‘Smiley’ thanks to its curved “Self-Winding” text at 6 o’clock—a detail that has become highly sought after by collectors.
This 2015 example stands out for more than its collectability. It carries unique provenance, originally purchased by Dylan Jones OBE and engraved “Rake of the Year 2014.” The award was linked to The Rake, a men’s fashion publication closely tied to Revolution, one of the most influential watch magazines worldwide. The 41mm case takes inspiration from Tudor’s 1978 Submariner ref. 7900 series, with brushed and polished surfaces, a bold crown, and a unidirectional stainless steel bezel fitted with a striking blue insert. The domed sapphire crystal protects a matte black dial with luminous snowflake hands, applied markers, and the signature “Smiley” script. Inside, the modified ETA 2824 ticks at 28,800 beats per hour, stripped of its date complication and upgraded with Tudor-specific modifications for reliability.

A Word on Condition
This watch is in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with careful use.
