Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16800 - Complete Set

Positioned at the intersection of vintage aesthetics and contemporary appeal, the Rolex Submariner 16800 has garnered a devoted following among today’s collectors. This timepiece seamlessly blends unmistakably vintage design elements with practical wearability, making it suitable for everyday use.

The Rolex Submariner, renowned worldwide, has maintained continuous production since its initial introduction in 1953. The reference 16800, often referred to as a “transitional” model, exhibits features from both preceding and subsequent generations of the Rolex Submariner. Remarkably, it remains relatively affordable compared to other vintage Submariner models from a similar time period, such as its predecessor, the 1680 and the Non Date Submariner, the 5513.

Upon its debut, the reference 16800 marked significant changes. Rolex replaced the older-style acrylic crystal with a more durable scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire crystal. Additionally, the movement was upgraded to the higher-beat cal. 3035, featuring the innovative Quickset date function.

Notably, the reference 16800 was the first Submariner to achieve water resistance up to 300 meters, a depth rating that still stands as the Submariner’s standard today. Furthermore, during this period, the bezel design transitioned to a safer uni-directional rotation, preventing divers from miscalculating their dive times.

This Submariner Date 16800 serves as an exceptional example. It boasts an original matte dial which has developed into a deep charcoal colour over the years. The dial is adorned with tritium lume plots that have gracefully developed a delightful custard patina on the hour markers, harmonizing seamlessly with the lume on the original hands and the bezel lume pip. These dials are rarely found in such pristine condition, as many were replaced with glossy versions during servicing.

The robust case features thick lugs and is in very good condition. The Original solid link Oyster bracelet (reference 93150) remains in excellent condition, its clasp stamped with a ‘G’ dating it to 1982. Additionally, the bracelet is equipped with reference 593 endlinks. This watch comes complete with its original Rolex box, original guarantee document, original Rolex anchor, swing tag, calendar card and booklet so perfect for those collectors who are determined for box and papers (we will reserve judgement).
