Rolex has long perfected the art of two-tone design, and the Ref. 1675/3 GMT-Master is a prime example of how the brand blends steel and gold to striking effect. Since introducing mixed-metal watches in the 1940s, Rolex has consistently demonstrated that two-tone can be both elegant and functional. This model, in particular, shows just how well the combination of steel and gold can work in harmony.
The GMT-Master, first launched in 1955, was designed as a tool watch for commercial pilots to track two time zones simultaneously. The original reference 6542 laid the foundation for Rolex's sport watch legacy, following the success of the Submariner and Turn-O-Graph in the early 1950s. Developed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways, the GMT-Master became a symbol of aviation's golden age, offering a practical solution for air travel. By 1958, Rolex introduced the 6542 in all-yellow gold, marking the first gold sports watch in the brand’s history—a move that would pave the way for future two-tone variants.
In 1970, the Ref. 1675/3, the first two-tone GMT was to be added to Rolex’s catalog. The mix of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold was a bold departure from the standard steel-only models, and it quickly became a favorite among collectors. One of the most coveted features of the 1675/3 is its "nipple dial," named for the small, circular hour markers with a dot of luminous material at their center. This unique dial adds an extra layer of character to the watch, setting it apart from other GMT-Masters of the era.
The black and gold color scheme of this specific 1675/3 creates a timeless aesthetic that looks stunning both in person and on the wrist. The lume on the hour markers and hands has developed a lovely golden patina over the years, further enhancing the vintage appeal. The color of the lume appears warmer, almost gold-like, which beautifully complements the gold elements of the watch. Paired with the less common Oyster bracelet, this example stands as an exceptional iteration of the iconic two-tone GMT-Master.
