The Rolex Daytona, particularly the ceramic-bezel reference 116500, stands as one of the most iconic and recognisable wristwatches in history and for very good reason. The Rolex Daytona was named after the famous Daytona International Speedway in Florida, a hub for high-speed racing. The watch was initially introduced as the “Cosmograph,” but it was soon renamed the “Daytona” to emphasise its connection to the racing world. The Daytona was designed with professional race car drivers in mind. It features a tachymeter scale on the bezel, which allows drivers to measure average speeds over a given distance. The chronograph function is essential for timing laps and other racing-related activities.
Another reason for its popularity comes from celebrity endorsement, none more iconic than Paul Newman who played a significant role in elevating the Daytona to iconic status. In the 1970s, Newman, a celebrated actor and race car driver, was frequently seen wearing a Daytona. Newman’s association with the watch, combined with his fame and the watch’s rarity, led to a surge in its desirability. The “Paul Newman” Daytona became one of the most coveted timepieces in the world.
Introduced in 2016, the ref. 116500 replaced the ref. 116520, bringing notable updates such as a ceramic bezel and a subtly refreshed dial. The watch’s striking contrast dial and renowned case silhouette make it unmistakable. Continuing the legacy of its predecessor, the ref. 116500 is powered by the highly acclaimed Rolex caliber 4130. This chronograph mechanism, a standard since 2000, ensures superlative chronometer timekeeping and boasts a 72-hour power reserve.
Crafted with a 40mm steel case, screw-down pushers and crown, and a ceramic bezel, the Daytona ref. 116500 is immediately identifiable as Rolex’s esteemed chronograph. The dial’s black and silver subdial contrast offers a balanced, symmetrical aesthetic, highlighted by the signature red “Daytona” script. Applied hour markers and the 12 o’clock Rolex crown enhance its distinguished style, while lume-accented baton hands provide clear time indication.
