The Rolex Day-Date is one of the most recognisable and important dress watches ever made by Rolex.

First introduced in 1956, the Day-Date became famous as the first Rolex wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week written in full on the dial. It was only produced in precious metals, which helped establish it as one of the brand’s most prestigious models.

This example is a Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1803 from 1972, housed in a 36mm 18K yellow gold case with the classic fluted bezel. The 1803 is one of the most collected vintage Day-Date references, offering the traditional proportions, acrylic crystal and warm vintage charm that many collectors look for.

The standout feature here is the champagne linen dial. Unlike a standard champagne dial, the linen dial has a woven texture that catches the light beautifully and gives the watch much more depth. It is subtle at first glance, but under closer inspection it adds a huge amount of character.

Inside is the Rolex calibre 1556 automatic movement, one of the classic Day-Date movements of the period. This was the movement used in later Ref. 1803 examples and is part of what makes the reference such an important chapter in vintage Rolex collecting.

This is a brilliant example of a vintage yellow gold Rolex Day-Date. Elegant, recognisable, historically important and made more interesting by the linen dial.

A Word on Condition

This Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1803 is in very good vintage condition.

The 18K yellow gold case presents well, with strong overall shape and honest signs of careful wear. The fluted bezel retains a bright, defined appearance and gives the watch the classic Day-Date look.

The champagne linen dial is the real highlight. The texture remains clearly visible and adds a beautiful depth to the watch. The applied hour markers, handset, printed text and day/date apertures all present well, with the warmth and character expected from a vintage Rolex of this age.

The acrylic crystal suits the watch perfectly and adds to the charm of the reference.

Why Buy This Watch

The Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1803 is one of the great vintage Rolex references.

It has everything people want from a classic Day-Date: 36mm proportions, 18K yellow gold case, fluted bezel, acrylic crystal and the full day display at 12 o’clock. It is instantly recognisable, but still far more elegant than many modern precious metal Rolex watches.

What makes this example especially appealing is the linen dial. These textured Rolex dials have become increasingly appreciated because they add something special without feeling loud. The watch still has the warmth and presence of a yellow gold Day-Date, but the linen dial gives it a more refined, collector-focused edge.

For someone looking for a vintage Rolex Day-Date with more character than a standard champagne dial example, this is a superb choice.
