Launched in the late 1980s, the Rolex Ref. 16220 Datejust introduced a fresh take on the classic design with its engine-turned bezel, setting it apart from the more common fluted or smooth bezel options. With a subtle yet distinctive look, it offered a refined alternative that maintained the iconic Rolex charm, all while remaining highly versatile with its 36mm Oyster case and a variety of dial choices to suit any style.
As one of the first five-digit references in the Datejust collection, the 16220 was also a pioneer in Rolex's move to sapphire crystals, marking a key advancement in the brand's design. Produced from the late 1980s, this model introduced several notable upgrades, including the patented "jumping date" feature, which causes the date to switch instantaneously at midnight—a significant improvement over the gradual date-change mechanism used in earlier models. Additionally, the 16220 is powered by the caliber 3135, a newer and more refined movement compared to the caliber 3035 found in the earlier 160XX references, offering increased reliability and precision.
This particular Ref. 16220 is in excellent pre-owned condition, with clean lume on both the hour markers and hands, showcasing its well-preserved nature. The case remains sharp, and the Jubilee bracelet, while showing very light signs of wear consistent with age, adds to its overall appeal. It's a fantastic example of Rolex’s timeless craftsmanship, with all the key features that make this model a standout in the Datejust family.
