The Rolex Datejust Ref. 1603 is one of the most recognisable vintage Rolex references, but every so often you come across a configuration that completely changes the feel of the watch.
This is one of them.
Fitted with the blue “Wideboy” dial and matching handset, this 1972 example stands apart from the standard Datejust. The Wideboy configuration is defined by its broader, heavier hour markers and thicker hands, giving the watch a more substantial and slightly sportier presence on the wrist. It is a subtle variation, but once you see it, it is difficult to go back to a standard dial.
The blue dial adds another layer of character. It shifts in tone depending on the light, from a deep navy through to a brighter blue, giving the watch far more depth than a flat monochrome dial.
The engine turned bezel frames the dial perfectly, adding texture and reinforcing the vintage character of the piece. It is a detail Rolex no longer produces and one that collectors continue to appreciate.
At 36mm, the classic Datejust case remains one of the most balanced sizes ever produced. It wears comfortably, proportionally and with a presence that suits both casual and formal settings.
