It’s very rare that such an iconic watch from history can go through it’s life without everybody knowing its name. Yet this beautiful watch separates people in to two groups, those who don’t know it and those who follow it like a cult baby. Why is this watch so important?
Well to sum it up in one sentence; The Polerouter was designed by the legendary Gerald Genta (the same genius who designed the AP Royal Oak and the Patek Nautilus) when he was only a measly 24 years old. It was created for the first flight over the North Pole, which explains the name.
The first Polerouter was released a year prior to this piece we have in store in 1954 (it was originally called the POLARouter) to celebrate Scandinavian Airlines’ Royal Viking polar flights between New York, LA and mainland Europe. The daring flights adopted a brave new route that actually went over the North Pole, helping to reduce flight times. Flying over the North Pole presented a unique set of challenges for a watch, the most obvious being magnetic fields presented by the North Pole. The Polerouter was designed to be highly resistant to magnetic fields to maintain accuracy during the trip.
This particular Polerouter is in fantastic condition with original hands, dial and crown which is incredibly hard to find with these models and these have all aged gracefully over time.
