A truly awesome chronograph from Omega, loved by drivers and racers and not designed for a trip to the moon! Back in 1966 Omega released the Chronostop. The Chronostop was originally part of the Seamaster collection, however it was later transferred to the iconic Geneve collection the following year in 1967. The watch’s movement is operated by the crown and single pusher found on the right hand side of the case and it is wonderfully simple yet a pleasure to operate, This model uses the later 920 date calibre compared to earlier models that use the non date 865 Calibre. The 920 is a high-accuracy and high-beat calibre operating at 21,600 vph. A high beat movement for this era.
The Chronostop in its tenure won many accolades including the 1967 Honour Prize for “Chronographs and Sport Watches” in the competition sponsored by the Swiss Watchmaking Federation and the Chronostop also took the first prize for Industrial Aesthetics at the Utrecht Spring Fair in 1968. It was selected as the official Omega timer at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg and the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.
The stunning orange second hand for the chronograph function is started by pressing the single pusher, then pressed again and held to hold the hand and allow for the user to accurately read the seconds. Once the pusher is released, the orange hand will fly back to 12. Pretty nifty!
With its awesome slate grey dial and pops of orange on the chronograph hand and loge make for an awesome retro yet eye catching design. The chequered flag outer minute track on the dial really catches attention and gives this watch that added sporty aesthetic. The tritium lume on the hands and markers has aged wonderfully. This is a wonderful Omega chronograph at a very competitive price point.
