Few watches are as instantly recognisable or historically important as the Heuer Monaco Ref. 1133B. Launched in 1969, it was one of the first automatic chronographs ever created, and it immediately made history when Steve McQueen wore it in the 1971 film Le Mans, cementing its status as a motorsport icon.
This particular example, produced in 1970, is from the very same year that filming took place. It features the classic blue “Standard production” dial with white subdials, a configuration identical to the one seen on McQueen’s wrist. According to Jack Heuer himself, only around 4,500 examples of the Ref. 1133 were ever produced, making it a highly sought-after and rare vintage chronograph.
The watch is powered by the legendary Calibre 12 automatic chronograph movement, developed in partnership with Breitling, Hamilton-Büren, and Dubois-Depraz as part of the race to deliver the world’s first automatic chronograph. Its distinctive square 40mm case and left-hand crown design remain radical even today, giving the Monaco its unmistakable presence.
This example comes on a Heuer Corfam strap with “Sun Buckle” and is accompanied by a reproduction Monaco box, period booklet, 1970/71 Heuer catalogue, and purchase history from Classic Heuer in Germany (2020).
Motorsport Heritage
The Monaco was born from Heuer’s deep involvement with Formula 1 and endurance racing during the late 1960s and 1970s. At the same time the Monaco debuted, Heuer had entered into sponsorships with Ferrari and Gulf Oil, cementing its reputation as the go-to watch brand for professional drivers. The Monaco’s bold square case and racing chronograph functionality were a perfect fit for this era of high-octane motorsport, and its starring role on McQueen’s wrist in Le Mans only reinforced its racing pedigree.
