Heuer Autavia ‘Orange Boy’ Ref. 11630 – Mark 2 Dial – 1970s Racing Icon
Bold. Functional. Unmistakably ‘70s. The Heuer Autavia Ref. 11630 'Orange Boy' is more than a striking chronograph — it’s a vintage motorsport legend, famously worn by professional racers and trackside mechanics throughout the golden age of Formula 1.
Estimated to have been produced around 1977, this example features the rare Mark 2 'Orange Boy' dial, defined by its inky black base, crisp tritium filled baton markers, and vivid orange accents. The dial is in great condition, showing minimal ageing and delivering superb contrast against the matte base — a key highlight of this model. The orange hands and orange details on the subdial markers give the watch its nickname and inject vintage racing flair.
Powering the watch is the Calibre 12 automatic chronograph movement, a direct descendant of the revolutionary Calibre 11 — one of the world’s first automatic chronograph movements.
The 42mm stainless steel case is a standout on its own. This one is in razor-sharp condition, retaining its original case geometry and chamfered edges. The original bi-directional bezel is present with only minor wear, and the watch retains the thick black inner tension ring distinctive to the 11630 reference — a key difference from earlier 1163 cases. It wears big, bold, and purpose-built.

🏁 Racing Pedigree & Design Innovation
Originally introduced as a professional tool watch for motorsport, the Heuer Autavia earned its name from a combination of AUTomobile and AVIAtion. By the time the 11630 was released, the Autavia had firmly established itself on the wrists of Formula 1 drivers and racing teams, celebrated for its legibility, durability, and bold design.
The ‘Orange Boy’ 11630 represents the next phase in Heuer’s design evolution — with an upgraded case, reinforced crystal tension ring, and a daring colour palette that captured the spirit of the late 1970s. Few chronographs from this era offer such a rich blend of utility and charisma.
🛠️ Condition & Authenticity
This watch is in outstanding condition for its age. The dial is beautifully preserved, the case is razor-sharp, and the original bezel remains intact with only light signs of wear. As always, this piece has been professionally serviced by our watchmakers, comes backed by our 12-month warranty, and includes Watts On Watches bespoke packaging and full purchase documentation.
