The Cartier Tank Basculante XL Ref. 2522 is one of the most distinctive interpretations of the Tank family. While the Tank Louis and Tank Must represent classical elegance, the Basculante introduces something far more architectural.
Inspired by the idea of protection and versatility, the Basculante features a reversible case mechanism similar in concept to the Reverso. The case can be flipped within its carriage, allowing the solid caseback to face outward. It is a clever and rarely seen complication within the Cartier catalogue, adding both functionality and mechanical intrigue to an otherwise refined dress watch.
This XL “Jumbo” example from 2001 measures 26.5 x 39.5mm, giving it excellent wrist presence while retaining the unmistakable Tank proportions. It sits beautifully on the wrist and feels balanced, elegant and slightly unconventional, which is exactly why collectors are drawn to this reference.
