This is Josh’s favourite watch that we offer at Watts On Watches as he grapples to secure the old money lifestyle. The iconic Cartier Santos. The Cartier Santos is believed to be the first modern wristwatch for men. Cartier created the Santos for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont after he complained about using a pocket watch during flight, because of this the first Santos, the Santos Dumont, was created. The Cartier Santos quickly became a legend of the times. The overall design of a rectangular watch with soft yet abrupt edges and a dial featuring thin Roman numerals has survived through to modern times, proving its icon status.

The Santos was rebooted in the 1980s as a thoroughly modern Cartier. It became the ultimate status symbol of wealth, lifestyle and success, which was certainly assisted by Gordan Gekko. It was made into a true do anything go anywhere piece and was introduced in a more rugged style with a metal bracelet. The modern Santos follows this design philosophy, using larger cases, sportier designs, and an automatic movement.

This particular example is one of the 2000’s XL range and sports a larger 32mm by 45mm case. Perfect for those who like the style but still feel the need for a modern case size. We won’t judge. Honestly.
