Breguet is one of the most important names in the history of watchmaking. Founded by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1775, the manufacture has spent centuries producing some of the most technically accomplished and beautifully finished watches in horology.
The Marine collection takes its inspiration from Breguet's historic connection with maritime timekeeping, combining the elegance of traditional French watchmaking with a slightly more sporting approach to watch design.
This 1995 Breguet Marine Chronograph Ref. 3460 is a particularly attractive example of that philosophy. Produced in 18K yellow gold and measuring just 35.5mm, it combines the sophistication of a traditional dress watch with the mechanical complexity of an automatic chronograph.
However, the real attraction of this particular example is undoubtedly its dial.
Rather than the more commonly encountered silver guilloché dials, this example features a rare mother of pearl dial decorated with multiple guilloché patterns. Mother of pearl is already a fascinating material, naturally changing its appearance depending on the angle and lighting, but the addition of Breguet's intricate engine-turned decoration creates something considerably more interesting.
The central portion features a beautifully executed geometric guilloché pattern, while the three subsidiary registers display their own distinctive textured finishes. The different patterns provide visual separation between the chronograph functions without compromising the overall elegance of the dial.
Surrounding these details is a traditional Roman numeral chapter ring, complemented by the unmistakable blued steel Breguet hands. Their characteristic open-tipped design has become one of the most recognisable signatures in fine watchmaking.
Unlike some mother of pearl variations of the reference 3460, this example does not feature diamond hour markers, retaining a wonderfully classical appearance.
At the heart of the watch is the Breguet automatic calibre 576, based on the highly regarded Frédéric Piguet 1185 movement. This slim automatic column-wheel chronograph calibre is an important piece of watchmaking engineering, allowing Breguet to incorporate a fully functioning chronograph into a relatively compact and elegantly proportioned case.
The movement offers central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, a 12-hour counter at 9 o'clock, running seconds at 6 o'clock and a date aperture positioned beneath the lower register.
The 18K yellow gold case features an attractive polished finish, distinctive fluted caseband, straight lugs and an unusual Breguet-signed crown. The two chronograph pushers sit neatly either side of the crown, maintaining the balanced appearance of the watch.
Completing the piece is a brown leather strap fitted with its 18K yellow gold Breguet folding clasp.
For anyone who appreciates traditional watchmaking with a slightly more unusual character, this Breguet Marine Chronograph is a particularly compelling example.

A Word on Condition
This Breguet Marine Chronograph presents as a very attractive example, retaining the elegant proportions and beautiful finishing that make these early Marine references so appealing.
The 18K yellow gold case remains well defined, with its polished bezel, straight lugs and distinctive fluted caseband all contributing to the watch's refined appearance. There are light scratches and signs of age throughout, particularly around the polished surfaces, consistent with a watch that has been enjoyed over the past three decades.
The mother of pearl dial is undoubtedly the standout feature.
The intricate guilloché decoration remains beautifully visible, with the contrasting patterns across the main dial and subsidiary registers giving the watch an impressive amount of depth. The mother of pearl displays subtle variations in tone, particularly when viewed under different lighting, while the blued steel hands provide an attractive contrast.
There are some subtle signs of age to the dial, including gentle tonal variation around the subsidiary registers, but these do little to detract from its overall appearance.
The Roman numerals remain clearly defined, and the original Breguet aesthetic is wonderfully preserved.
The watch is fitted with a brown leather strap, which complements the warmth of the yellow gold case particularly well. Importantly, it retains its signed 18K gold Breguet folding clasp, an attractive and valuable detail in its own right.
Overall, this is a very well-presented example of an unusual Breguet chronograph, with the combination of its rare dial, warm gold case and compact proportions giving it considerable charm.
Accessories / The Set
This watch is sold as watch only, which is typical for vintage and neo-vintage timepieces. We place greater value on condition, originality and overall integrity than on whether a box or papers happen to be present.
Many watches from this period have lost their original packaging over time, and we do not believe in inflating prices with non-original extras.
If a watch does include genuine box and papers, this will always be clearly noted in the description.
This example retains its 18K yellow gold Breguet folding clasp, which is an important part of the watch's overall presentation.
All purchases are supplied with bespoke Watts On Watches packaging and full purchase documentation.
Why Buy This Watch
There are plenty of attractive gold chronographs from the 1990s, but very few offer quite the same combination of traditional watchmaking, mechanical sophistication and unusual finishing as this Breguet Marine Chronograph.
For me, one of the most appealing aspects of Breguet watches from this period is how they combine classical design with genuinely interesting movements.
The reference 3460 is an excellent example.
The 35.5mm yellow gold case is beautifully proportioned, and despite housing an automatic chronograph movement, the watch remains remarkably elegant on the wrist.
It is a reminder that a complicated watch does not need to be excessively large to feel substantial.
Then there is the calibre 576. Its Frédéric Piguet 1185 foundation is a serious piece of chronograph engineering, combining a column-wheel mechanism with a slim automatic architecture. It is the sort of movement that will appeal to someone who appreciates what is happening beneath the dial just as much as the watch's appearance.
However, what really makes this particular example special is that mother of pearl guilloché dial.
Guilloché is one of Breguet's great artistic signatures, and the combination of multiple engine-turned patterns with a naturally iridescent material creates a dial that is genuinely different from the conventional silver examples.
The absence of diamond markers is also something I particularly appreciate. It allows the quality of the dial finishing to take centre stage, without adding unnecessary decoration.
The traditional Roman numerals, beautiful blued steel hands and warm yellow gold case give the watch a timeless appearance, while the chronograph registers add just enough complexity to keep things interesting.
For someone already familiar with the more obvious names in high-end chronographs, this Breguet represents an opportunity to own something a little different.
A beautifully proportioned, mechanically sophisticated and genuinely interesting chronograph from one of the most historically important manufacturers in watchmaking.
Every watch we sell is fully inspected to meet our exacting standards. We stand by the quality of our stock, which is why every purchase comes with a 12-month warranty as standard.
