The definition of the top of the tower since 1956. The Day-Date has remained, in our opinion, the classic flagship watch in the Rolex line up still to this day. This was still the case back in the 1970’s with this model, the ref. 18038, which was introduced in 1978. This particular model is one of the first 18038 models to be offered to the market with the serial dating it to 1978.
The 36mm solid gold case, the iconic fluted bezel and, our favourite feature, the gold Presidential bracelet with the iconic Rolex coronet on the clasp are all classic elements of the Day-Date as a whole. This updated version did however feature a new case construction, which allowed the watch to be water resistant up to 100 meters, and a new self-winding movement, caliber 3055 with 28,800 bph.
The most useful upgrade for this reference was the addition of a single quick-set date function, in which one could change the date without continuously advancing the hands. A wide variation of dial configurations were offered with this reference with this particular example sporting a black Roman numeral dial but compared to its predecessors, the edge of the dial was no longer a “Pie Pan” dial, instead they were flat for increased legibility. Also, starting with this reference, the crystal was changed to sapphire for better durability.
