The first wristwatch ever created is generally credited to Breguet, made for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, in 1812. This was a custom made timepiece, designed more like a bracelet with a mechanical movement - intended for a woman, which was typical at the time.

However, the first wristwatch for men is often attributed to Louis Cartier in 1904, who created the Cartier Santos for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Unlike earlier ornamental wristlets, this was made for practical use - to allow the aviator to read time while flying.
